Across geographies, demographic groups, and sectors there are vast disparities in how capital flows which severely limits growth and opportunity within certain regions, populations, and industries. 

The barriers that create these disparities can be overcome. We use the tools of investment facilitation and blended finance to support communities and industries in unlocking capital for sustainable growth, a strong return, and greater economic opportunities within and across underserved markets. 

How we define “Underserved Markets” in the United States

Geographic

Capital and opportunity concentrate in some regions, leaving others under capitalized

For example: In 2023, just four markets on the west and east coasts represented 67% of the total value of venture capital investments in the US

Demographic

Some demographic groups face greater barriers to accessing capital than others, reflecting longstanding inequities in the United States

For example: One study found that women-founded companies raised less than half the capital that male-founded companies raised but generated 10% more revenue over a 5 year period

Sectoral

Underserved sectors are harder to define than underserved demographics or geographies

For example: the structure of crop insurance and existing loan infrastructure fails to take long-term economics based in cost and risk reduction into account

Why we should care

Without efficient and effective capital formation, the demographic, geographic, and sectoral economies that we care deeply about will struggle to grow. Without accurately identifying underserved markets, we can do little to address the very human problems that exist within them
